Player Spotlight: Mike Unwin

Menace interns Tyler Peeler and Jeremy Reinert will bring you a player spotlight each week during the 2012 season, starting with Mike Unwin.

Mike Unwin is back in Iowa – this time as a husband, a father and a member of the Des Moines Menace.

The Menace’s first-year striker moved to West Des Moines last September, bringing wife Kelli and daughter Chloe with him. A native of England, Unwin returns to the state where he started his college career, as an all-American (2009-10) at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.

“We moved back because my wife is from Clear Lake and my little girl Chloe is nine months,” said Unwin. “I was playing for (the University of) Buffalo and starting the preseason for the Rochester Rhinos.”

The Rhinos, who play in the professional first-division North American Soccer League, had already signed six forwards by the time Unwin joined their camp. When the team’s depth kept Unwin from signing a pro contract, leaving New York for Iowa became the best option for the Unwin family, in search of some familiarity as well as work.

Unwin has started a career with Willis Auto Campus, a sponsor of the Menace, working as a sales and leasing consultant.

“I’ve been with Willis since September,” said Unwin. “I primarily sell the Infinity line, but am allowed to sell across lot as well, which is really nice.”

A family man, a working man and an athlete, Unwin makes his Menace debut this Friday and Saturday for the double header against Real Colorado. The Menace looks to wield Unwin’s dynamic attacking skills to edge the Foxes on Opening Weekend.

Looking at the upcoming season Unwin has high aspirations.

“Personally I’d like to get into double digits in goals,” said Unwin. “And to win the league, that’s a main goal.”

Determined to move past the Foxes early in the season, the Menace hosts a kickoff time of 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at Valley Stadium.
