MUSCATINE, Iowa – Tuesday, June 5, 2018 – Same site, same opponent, same score…
And same champion. For the second year in a row, the Des Moines Menace Academy 14U boys clinched the Iowa State Cup title with a 3-1 victory over Bettendorf Soccer Association White. The repeat win came Sunday morning at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.
Like last year, Freddy Muniz went on a scoring spree to lead the offense. In the 2017 final, Muniz scored a hat trick in a come-from-behind, overtime win over BSA.
This past Saturday, he scored the first four goals in a 5-1 semifinal win over West Des Moines Soccer Club Royal; Josh Wilson added the fifth score.
Muniz delivered the championship-winner. It was bookended by scores from Tonatiuh Merlos-Rojas, who iced the title with an Upper 90 blast late in the second half.
The team’s title defense started May 27-28 in Waterloo, with wins against Vision Soccer Academy Premier (Waukee) and FC United (Cedar Rapids).
After competing in the the U.S. Youth Soccer Regional Championship in Sioux Falls last June as 13s, this group makes plans to return to regionals June 22-27 in the Indianapolis area.
“It’s an amazing feeling to go back-to-back winning state and heading to regionals,” head coach JR Fernandes said. “This is a special group of players and families. Hard work, dedication, passion, discipline and talent all helped us accomplish the win at state again. A special thank you to my family, the parents, (team manager) Kevin O’Conner and the Menace organization for all their support.”
Congratulations also to the Menace Academy 13U boys, who are 2018 Iowa Presidents Cup chmpions, after defeating the home-side Muscatine Soccer Club Mavericks, 2-1, on Sunday morning.
