WPSL season closes at home

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Thursday, July 13, 2017 – The race for second place in the Heartland Region will come down to the last weekend of the Women’s Premier Soccer League season.

And the final regional standings will be decided on the Des Moines Menace’s home turf – Saturday at Valley Stadium and Sunday at the Urbandale Soccer Complex.

The GSI Pride (6-0-0), the Menace’s Sunday opponent, has clinched the No. 1 spot and a playoff berth in the WPSL playoffs. Des Moines (3-1-2) sits in second with 11 points, but the Chicago Red Stars Reserves (3-2-1) are right behind with 10 points.

The second-place finisher will be decided on Saturday, when the Menace and Red Stars rematch. The teams tied 1-1 in Chicago last Saturday – a replica result from the last time the Red Stars visited Valley Stadium, in the last weekend of the 2016 season.

  • 3-1-2 in its fifth WPSL season (sixth season overall).
  • Sits in second in the Heartland Region behind GSI Pride.
  • Finished last season 6-1-1, second of five teams in the WPSL Heartland Region.
  • Rebecca Rodgers leads the team with five goals; Elise White (Reid), Ann Marie Jaworski, Whitney Sharpe and Jermaine Seoposenwe have also scored for the Menace.

ABOUT THE MENACE: The Des Moines Menace provides the highest level of soccer in Iowa. In their sixth season, the Menace women are part of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The Menace men’s team, in its 24th season, competes in the Premier Development League (PDL). With loyal support, the Menace men’s and women’s teams play their home games at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines to provide family fun entertainment. The Menace organization grows soccer by providing youth programs including Junior Menace (ages 3-9), Menace Youth Academy (ages 8-19) and youth tournaments, camps and clinics.
