Johnson, Brown go in MLS SuperDraft

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 – The 2017 Major League Soccer SuperDraft turned this Friday the 13th into a SuperDay for Des Moines Menace alumni Daniel Johnson and Jalen Brown.

With the 11th pick this afternoon, the Chicago Fire called on Johnson, a midfielder who saw action with the 2015 Menace. He is Des Moines’ third alum to go in the SuperDraft’s first round, joining Andrew Duran (chosen 15th by Seattle in 2012) and Deshorn Brown (chosen sixth by Colorado in 2013).

A native of Atlanta suburb Duluth, Ga., Johnson turned heads and upped his stock this week at the MLS Combine in Carson, Calif.  His much-talked-about soccer journey was featured on

Johnson’s winding path to the pros included time in England as part of the academy of English Premier League club West Ham United. After graduating from high school in Georgia, he began his college career with two years at Maryland, then transferred to Louisville after making three appearances with the Menace in 2015.  

With the 38th overall choice, New York City FC called on Brown, a midfielder who appeared in one match for the 2016 Menace. Brown is an Indianapolis native who has played for Xavier. He joined Johnson at this week’s MLS Combine.


The first two rounds of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft were announced this afternoon in Los Angeles. The draft concludes on Tuesday, when the third and fourth rounds will be conducted by conference call.  



  • Starting with the inaugural MLS draft in 1996, at least one Menace alum has been drafted each year, with just three exceptions: 1998, 2000 and 2011.
  • Every Menace team from 1998 to 2016 has featured at least one MLS draft pick.

ABOUT THE MENACE: The Des Moines Menace provides the highest level of soccer in Iowa. Preparing for its 24th season, the Menace men’s team competes in the Premier Development League (PDL). Entering its sixth season, the Menace women’s team is part of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). With loyal support, the Menace men’s and women’s teams play their home games at the Valley Stadium in West Des Moines to provide family-fun entertainment. The Menace organization provides the growth of the game of soccer in Iowa with their youth soccer programs, including Junior Menace (ages 3-9), Menace Youth Academy (ages six and older), and youth tournaments, camps and clinics.
