Chelsea Cline was Woman of the Match.
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Saturday, July 2, 2016 – With a 4-0 victory today at Nike Sports Complex, the Chicago Red Stars Reserves kept their perfect record intact, and they dealt the Des Moines Menace ladies their first setback.
Chicago, the defending Women’s Premier Soccer League champion, is 6-0-0 after winning this battle between the Heartland Region’s top teams. Des Moines is 3-0-1 heading into the season’s last two weeks.
The Red Stars’ goals came from Abigail Reed and Janelle Flaws in the first half and from Alexa Ben and Candace Johnson in the second stanza. With Flaws’ nine goals leading the way, Chicago has stockpiled 30 goals while not allowing a single score this season.
The match was scoreless until the 30th minute, and the Menace had an opportunity to grab the lead in the moments leading up to Chicago’s first score, when Danielle Puddefoot’s penalty kick was unsuccessful.
“I thought the girls fought hard. They gave it 100 percent,” Menace head coach Justin Vorster said. “It was just one of those days. Just didn’t go our way.
“Credit to Chicago; they’re a very good team, and they’ve got some wonderful players,” Vorster added. “We’ve just got to bounce back. We’ve really got to dig deep now and see what happens.
The Menace has three more home matches, including an anticipated July 16 rematch with the Red Stars at Valley Stadium.
All four of the Menace’s WPSL matches this season have ended with a 4-0 scoreline.
With a 19-2 goal differential against the Menace, Chicago is 5-0-0 in the all-time series.
The Red Stars’ 30-goal differential leads the WPSL. Of the league’s 100-plus teams, only FC Dallas (34 goals in 11 matches) and the Boston Breakers Reserves (33 goals in eight matches) have scored more.
