KOKOMO, Ind. – Friday, July 1, 2016 – Back-to-back losses have grounded the Des Moines Menace, which just three days ago was flying high on a year-long unbeaten streak.
Kokomo Mantis FC defeated the Menace 2-0 tonight in the first half of a Friday-Saturday doubleheader at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Troye Kiernan scored in the 16th and 45th minutes, helping the first-year team improve to 4-4-1, including 1-0-1 against the Menace.
The tide has turned for Des Moines, whose record drops to 8-2-1. Following dominant 7-0 and 9-0 home wins over WSA Winnipeg last weekend, the Menace was undefeated in 17 straight Premier Development League matches. A 1-0 loss at Chicago on Tuesday ended the successful stretch for the Heartland Division’s two-time defending champion.
The Menace had its chances tonight. Though the visitors outshot KokoMantis FC, 17-12, nothing materialized. Like in the teams’ first meeting – a scoreless draw at Valley Stadium on June 4 – the match got heated in the final minutes, with the sides waging in a yelling match.
KokoMantis FC is the first PDL team to score multiple goals against the Menace, which entered tonight with a league-best 32-3 scoring differential. The Indiana side is also the first PDL expansion team in 15 years to win against the Menace.
Entering tonight, the Menace was undefeated in 27 straight matches against expansion teams – 22-0-5 since a 2-1 home loss to Chicago Eagles Select on June 9, 2001.
Des Moines’ previous losing streak came in June 2013, when the Menace dropped three straight home matches to Springfield and Thunder Bay (twice).
The Menace has not conceded a first-half score since a 2-1 season-opening win against Chicago.
Kokomo opened the season 2-0-1 and shook off a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 home win over Chicago last Saturday.
This was the Menace’s first PDL action in Indiana since back-to-back wins in South Bend against the Indiana Invaders in June 2004.
MAN of the MATCH: Jimmy Fiscus, for his defensive efforts. Fiscus – a Michigan State Spartan from Ypsilanti, Mich. – went the full 90 minutes tonight.
UP NEXT: After closing its road slate tomorrow, the Menace looks forward to three final home matches on the schedule: July 9 (Thunder Bay), July 15 (Toledo) and July 16 (St. Louis).
