Menace duo drafted by MLS teams

Chris Hellmann is the 37th Menace alum to go in the MLS Draft.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016 – For five straight years – and 14 of the last 15 – at least one former Des Moines Menace player has been drafted by a Major League Soccer team.

The streak continued today, thanks to Chase Minter and Chris Hellmann, whose names were called in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft. Columbus Crew SC chose Minter with the draft’s 21st pick; Vancouver Whitecaps FC drafted Hellmann with the 29th.

As an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, Minter made one Premier Development League appearance for Des Moines in 2011. A native of Heath, Texas, Minter is a two-time Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year and Cal Poly’s all-time leader in assists (21).

Hellmann led the Menace in goals and assists each of the last two years. He collected 15 goals and 11 assists for Des Moines, including nine goals and seven assists in 2014, when he earned all-PDL accolades. The native of Cologne, Germany received all-America status his last two seasons at Lynn (Fla.), racking up 45 goals and 26 assists and propelling the Fighting Knights to the 2014 NCAA Division-II championship.

In the past week, Minter and Hellmann upped their draft stock with their performances at the 2016 MLS Player Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The 2016 SuperDraft opened today with the first two rounds (41 picks) announced in Baltimore. It concludes on Tuesday, with 40 more selections to be conducted by conference call.

Every Menace team from the last 18 seasons (1998-2015) has featured at least one MLS draft pick. Minter and Hellmann are the 36th and 37th Menace alumni drafted by MLS teams.
