Machado highlights trio of Menace honorees

Fernando Machado (shown heading the ball) has received PDL honors for the first time in his two seasons with the Menace.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Wednesday, July 1, 2015 – Announced today by the Premier Development League, Des Moines Menace defender Fernando Machado is on the PDL Team of the Week, and teammates Shawn Claud Lawson and Leigh Veidman are honorable-mention selections.

Machado assisted Veidman’s 12th-minute goal in the Menace’s 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Thunder Bay on Saturday. Lawson scored the game-winner in a 3-1 defeat of Springfield on Friday.

Last weekend’s home sweep puts the Menace in a favorable position heading down the season’s home stretch. Des Moines (6-2-1, 19 points), Thunder Bay (6-2-3, 21 points) and Chicago (5-3-2, 17 points) are jockeying for the Heartland Division’s two playoff berths. With five games left on its schedule, the Menace has more remaining opportunities than their competition. Thunder Bay won at Chicago, 2-0, today, one week before these teams reunite on Canadian soil.

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil who attends Ashford (Clinton, Iowa), Machado is the second Menace player to make the league’s team of the week. A Menace octet has received PDL honors, with Veidman twice earning honorable mention.
