Another 1-1 tie for Menace, KC

OLATHE, Kan. – Sunday, June 14, 2015 – For the second time this season, the Des Moines Menace and the Kansas City Courage battled to a 1-1 draw.

Tonight’s result at College Boulevard Athletic Complex is a repeat of the Women’s Premier Soccer League rivals’ May 30 matchup at Valley Stadium.

Unlike the first time around, the Menace struck first in this rematch. In tonight’s 31st minute, Elise Reid and Lindsey Bywater combined on a nifty give-and-go. Reid smashed the ball into the top of the net, and for the first time this season Des Moines was on the board before halftime.

“It was a difficult game today, and I was excited scored first,” Menace head coach Justin Vorster said. “They made it very difficult for us to break them down, but we had our chances.”

It appeared the Menace would carry that lead into the second half. However, the Courage changed those plans at the stroke of halftime, when Brooke Zimmerman finished Caroline Kastor’s cross.

In a striking contrast to the Menace’s scoring outburst last night, Des Moines and Kansas City scratched out a scoreless second half. Just 24 hours earlier, the Menace offense exploded in a 6-1 win over Quad City; all seven goals came in the second half of this all-Iowa matchup at Cownie Soccer Park.

The Menace’s record levels to 2-2-2, and the Courage’s ledger moves to 1-2-2. Down to its final four matches, Des Moines is off for 12 days until a June 26-27 road trip to Chicago and St. Louis.

“I think it will be a good rest period for our girls, and I think they’ll come back fresh for a strong finish to the season,” Vorster said.

The Menace has just one remaining home match: Saturday, July 11 against Fire and Ice SC at Valley Stadium. The team closes the season the next day at Minnesota.

WOMAN of the MATCH: Elise Reid, for her first goal in a Menace uniform. Reid is a Cedar Rapids native and an Iowa State graduate

UP NEXT: Des Moines’s next action comes Friday, June 26 at Chicago and Saturday, June 27 at Fire and Ice SC (Columbia, Ill.).
