Ankeny native Austin Gochneaur has wasted no time making an impact in his debut season with the Des Moines Menace.
Since making the roster two weeks ago, Gochneaur has gone the full 90 minutes each of the last two Saturdays at Valley Stadium. The center back has bolstered a hard-nosed defense that has not allowed a goal through its first three Premier Development League matches.
“It just comes down to hard work,” Gochneaur said. “It’s something we’re proud of. We just want to continue to work together and get better every day to protect our net and to score goals.”
An economics major with a minor in finance, Gochneaur enters his senior season at Western Illinois. During his time with the Leathernecks, he’s played 44 games and collected 13 points on five goals and three assists.
This beard enthusiast takes some time out of a busy day with the Menace to talk about Ankeny, soccer, and just what makes his facial hair the topic of everyone’s discussion.
