Eagles snap Menace's WPSL streak

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Sunday, May 31, 2015 – The Des Moines Menace’s six-match Women’s Premier Soccer League unbeaten streak came to a close this afternoon.

With Ashlie Dexter scoring in the 65th and 73rd minutes, the Quad City Eagles defeated the Menace, 2-0, at Davenport Soccer Complex.

“It’s a tough loss. We had a lot of chances,” said Menace head coach Justin Vorster. “The girls just need to stay focused and stay positive. We all know deep down this is a game we should’ve won. We’ll take the lessons learned and bounce back.”

The Menace ladies’ setback comes 24 hours after their 1-1 home draw with the Kansas City Courage.

Des Moines’ record levels to 1-1-1, while the Eagles, coming off a 3-0 home win over Minnesota yesterday, are 2-0. This match renewed the Menace’s only in-state rivalry. After not fielding a team in 2014, the Eagles are back for their third WPSL season.

Saddled with its first loss since last June 15, the Menace gets a shot at redemption the next two Saturdays at home.

On June 6, the Menace hosts the Chicago Red Stars Reserves – the team that dealt Des Moines its last loss of 2014 – at Valley Stadium. On June 13, the Menace rematches Quad City at Cownie Soccer Park, following the Iowa high school girls soccer tournament’s 3A final.

WOMAN of the MATCH: Whitney Sharpe, for her steady play at right-back. Sharpe was a two-time Iowa Player of the Year and a four-time state champion at West Des Moines Valley. After playing for the inaugural Menace women in 2012, she is back with team following two seasons with AFC Ajax in the Netherlands.

UP NEXT: The Menace women will be at home the next two Saturdays: June 6 against the Chicago Red Stars Reserves at Valley Stadium, and June 13 against the Quad City Eagles at Cownie Soccer Park. After this, the team hosts just one more WPSL match, on July 11, when Fire and Ice SC visits Valley Stadium.

This coming Saturday’s match opens a Menace doubleheader on Youth Soccer Night. After the women host Chicago at 4:30, the men host the Muskegon Risers at 7:30.
