WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, May 30, 2015 – Thanks to Katie Hurd’s rebound goal in the 75th minute, the Des Moines Menace women rallied today for a 1-1 result – the first draw in the team’s 30-match history.

The Kansas City Courage put the Menace in a hole in the 30th minute of this Women’s Premier Soccer League clash at Valley Stadium. From 25 yards out, Christina De Zeeuw bent her free kick around a wall of defenders and into the lower-right corner of the goal.

Hurd delivered the equalizer after Haley Helverson’s shot was deflected off the hands of KC keeper Sierra Bonham. After collecting the ball in a crowd, Hurd fired a rocket that hit the goal post and found the back of the net.

These teams continued where they left off in 2014, when the Menace clawed its way to a pair of one-goal wins over the first-year Courage. After settling for this tie, Des Moines is 1-0-1 and Kansas City is 1-1-1. The Menace ladies’ all-time record is 21-8-1, and they are on a six-match unbeaten streak going back to last season.

“It wasn’t our day,” Menace head coach Justin Vorster said. “I’ll take the point from the game. We’re creating good opportunities. The goals are going to come.”

On a quick turnaround, Vorster and company travel to Davenport tomorrow for a 5 p.m. in-state showdown with the Quad City Eagles, who have returned to WPSL action after a one-year hiatus.

WOMAN of the MATCH: Katie Hurd, who is back for her third season with the Menace. Hurd is a native of Gretna, Neb., and a graduate of Augustana (S.D.).

UP NEXT: After their first road action of the season, the Menace women will be at home the next two Saturdays: June 6 against the Chicago Red Stars Reserves at Valley Stadium, and June 13 against the Quad City Eagles at Cownie Soccer Park.
