WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, May 23, 2015 – Overcoming a slow start to their Women’s Premier Soccer League season, the Des Moines Menace struck twice early in the second half of a 2-0 win over the Minnesota TwinStars today at Valley Stadium.
Ashlie Stokes and Danielle Puddefoot provided the goals to give Justin Vorster the victory in his debut as the Menace’s head coach.
“I’m just overly excited by the result,” Vorster said. “I was happy with the way we played, happy with the way we circulated the ball.”
Unable to capitalize on early opportunities, the Menace struggled to a scoreless halftime.
“I just told them to be patient,” Vorster said. “I told them the goals will come.”
They did, with the first score coming less than three minutes after the break.
Stokes opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick after a poorly played clearance by Minnesota was whistled for a handball in the box.
In the 55th minute, fourth-year Menace veteran Carlan Samuelson muscled her way down the right flank, drawing TwinStars goalkeeper Rhonda Morgan and finding Puddefoot. The Menace newcomer poked the ball into the open net.
“We missed some of our chances today,” Vorster said. “Hopefully next week we will make the most of our chances."
The Menace prepares for two opportunities next weekend. On Saturday (May 30), the team hosts the Kansas City Courage, which downed Minnesota 2-0 last night at home in the teams’ season-opener. The next day (Sunday, May 31), Des Moines travels to Davenport to face the Quad City Eagles.
WOMAN of the MATCH: Ashlie Stokes, who opened the scoring with her successful PK attempt in the 48th minute. Stokes, a recent Drake University graduate from Sioux City, is wearing the captain’s band in her second season with the Menace.
