KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Wednesday, July 9, 2014 – The Des Moines Menace’s third straight Women’s Premier Soccer League victory – 2-1 tonight against the Kansas City Courage – ensures the team’s third consecutive winning season.
Riding a three-match WPSL winning streak for the first time, the 6-3-0 Menace looks to finish the season on an upswing this Saturday, hosting Fire and Ice SC at Valley Stadium.
“A good win,” said Menace head coach Kevin Schalk. “The kids are working very hard, and I am very proud of this group. I’ve told the team to concentrate to winning out, and I feel like they’ve been focusing on that.”
For the second-straight game, the Menace used a second-half score – this time, an own goal pressured by Autumn Hayes and Jordyn Thompson in the 71st minute – to edge the Courage (2-6-1).
The first-year team struck first tonight at Bourke Field on the Rockhurst University campus. Hyoejeong Joe scored in the 11th minute.
Mounting several offensive attacks in the early going, the visitors broke through in the 27th minute, when Lauren Odino equalized on an assist from Hayes, who drew out Courage goalkeeper Emma Crenshaw.
Hayes slotted the ball to Odino, who took one touch and tapped in a close-range shot.
In Des Moines’ previous outing, the Menace jumped to a 2-0 lead against the Courage on June 28 at Valley Stadium. Kansas City evened the match, but the home side prevailed on a late score. Haley Helverson scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season, and she assisted Marissa Hurt’s game-winner.
Though the Menace is out of the playoff picture, the team can clinch second place in the WPSL Midwest – Central Division. Fire and Ice comes to Valley Stadium with a 5-2-1 mark. The St. Louis-area team closes its season on Sunday, here in Kansas City.
WOMAN of the MATCH: Lauren Odino, for her first Menace goal. Odino is a Texas native and an Iowa State graduate who scored eight goals for the Cyclones (2006-08).
