WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Thursday, July 3, 2014 – Des Moines Menace midfielder Chris Hellmann is the Premier Development League Player of the Week, announced today by the United Soccer Leagues.
Hellmann scored all three of the Menace’s goals in a home sweep of the Thunder Bay Chill last weekend. Averaging a goal per game, he leads the Menace in goals (six) and points (13).
Sean Dong assisted each of Hellmann’s goals last weekend. On Saturday, Hellmann’s sliding poke was the lone score in a match that was scoreless at halftime. On Sunday, Dong and Hellmann connected twice late in the first half, spotting Des Moines a two-goal halftime lead. The Menace (7-1-0) held on for a 2-1 win to maintain its place atop the Heartland Division standings.
A native of Cologne, Germany, and a student-athlete at Lynn University (Fla.), Hellmann is the Menace’s first PDL Player of the Week since Husref Jupic earned the honor with a hat-trick performance on May 12, 2012.
Hellmann’s recognition keeps a streak alive for his team. One Menace player has received PDL accolades for four weeks running. Brandon Fricke was a member of the PDL Team of the Week on June 12; Hellmann (June 19) and Nico Wright (June 26) received honorable mention.
