WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Sunday, June 29, 2014 – The East boys erased a 2-0 deficit, but the West ultimately prevailed in a thrilling finish to the 2014 Iowa East-West All-Star Cup today at Valley Stadium.
Needing a shootout to settle a 2-all draw, the West sealed the win when Spencer’s Cole Loehr buried his kick from the mark. The West side won the shootout, 4-3, as Ankeny Centennial goalkeeper Chris Harris emerged the hero with two huge saves.
Harris redeemed himself, after he surrendered a pair of goals in his 27 minutes in goal. The East got back in the match with scores in the 60th and 65th minutes. Linn Mar’s Jared Belin capitalized on a misplayed clearance by Harris, and Mid-Prairie’s Austin Errthum equalized on a rebound header.
“I feel great,” said Harris, who was named the cup’s most valuable player. “When I gave up the first goal, I told the guys, ‘I’m going to get it back for us.’ I had faith in my teammates, that they would keep it together.”
Harris, a four-year high school starter prepping for his freshman season at Simpson College, stopped the East’s second and third PK attempts.
“To go out and hear the crowd and to hear my teammates cheering me on, it gave me an overwhelming sense of excitement,” said Harris.
Goal-scorer-turned-goalie Belin saved the West’s fourth attempt, which was sandwiched by successful attempts from Pella’s Anthony Bentzinger and Cedar Rapids Washington’s Jacob Bjornsen that evened the shootout at 3-all.
In the middle of the 80-minute regulation, Ames’ Tomas Lence (32nd minute) and Ankeny Centennial’s Colin Robinson (57th) scored to put the West in a seemingly comfortable spot.
A year after the East boys and girls swept the state’s all-star games, the West earned a sweep. In the girls’ edition yesterday afternoon, the West defeated the East, 4-2.
The games were organized by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, presented by Soccer Connections and hosted by the Des Moines Menace. Today’s game was followed by a Premier Development League fixture between the Menace and the Thunder Bay Chill.
