Hayes, Helverson help Menace to 2-0 win

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, June 21, 2014 – Needing a win to avoid the Des Moines Menace’s first three-match losing streak, strikers Haley Helverson and Autumn Hayes delivered in a big way.

They teamed up for a pair of second-half goals in a 2-0 win over the Madison 56ers this afternoon at Valley Stadium. This is the Menace’s second sweep of a Women’s Premier Soccer League foe this season.

In today’s 54th minute, Hayes flicked the ball to a streaking Helverson. On a breakaway, Heleverson slotted the ball into the net for her team-best fourth goal of the season.

Hayes put in a rebound goal ten minutes later, when Madison goalkeeper Megan Ledin parried Helverson’s shot attempt.

“Haley did a great job connecting today,” Hayes said. “It’s good to just put the ball on the frame. Haley did that. I had the easy part: I just had touch it in.”

Menace head coach Kevin Schalk shuffled the lineup, giving Hayes – a mainstay in the team’s central defense – her first start up top. She responded with her first Menace goal.

The defeat of winless Madison (0-6-1) could not come at a better time for the Menace, which dropped a pair of road matches last weekend in Illinois.
“We came into this match determined to the Menace Soccer we want to play,” said Hayes. “We had to keep our patience and settle down a little bit.”

With a pair of wins against Madison (3-0 on June 1) and two more against Minnesota, Des Moines is 4-3-0, eying a sweep of the Kansas City Courage in the teams’ next two outings.

The Menace hosts the Courage on June 28 at Valley Stadium at 4:30 p.m. Following a holiday weekend off, the Menace will travel to Kansas City on July 9.

WOMAN of the MATCH: Autumn Hayes, for her goal and assist. Hayes, a native of La Crescent, Minn., plays for Southwest Minnesota State.

UP NEXT: Des Moines hosts the Kansas City Courage next Saturday (June 28) at 4:30 p.m., in the middle of a tripleheader at Valley Stadium. The action starts with the Iowa girls high school all-star game at 2 o’clock, and it concludes with a 7:30 Premier Development League match between the Menace and the Thunder Bay Chill.
