WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, June 7, 2014 – Defeating the Minnesota TwinStars, 1-0, today at Valley Stadium, the Des Moines Menace completed its first season sweep of a Women’s Premier Soccer League opponent.
With their first home win in nearly a year, the Menace ladies are 3-1-0. The team’s last home victory in WPSL play came June 9 last season.
Nicole Pearson delivered today’s lone goal. Pearson, who opened the scoring in last Sunday’s 3-0 win at Madison, made good on a free kick in the 42nd minute.
From 25 yards out, Pearson blasted the ball into the goal’s upper-left corner.
“It was time for me to step up,” Pearson said. “It was a good opportunity to help the team. I felt like I was in the zone, and, luckily, it went in.”
The Menace opened the season with a 3-1 road win on May 24, in the TwinStars’ inaugural WPSL match.
A week after dropping a 3-0 match here against Chicago, the Menace was hoping to find the net a few more times, to catch up on the season’s aggregate scoring.
Des Moines preps for a pivotal weekend in Illinois. On Friday, the Menace faces Fire and Ice SC (Columbia, Ill.) – the team that dispatched Des Moines (6-4-0 a year ago in its first WPSL season) in the playoffs last July. On Sunday, the Menace gets a rematch with Chicago.
“We’ll keep working,” Menace head coach Kevin Schalk said. “We just need to make sure we’re taking care of business, taking it one game at a time.”
WOMAN of the MATCH: Nicole Pearson, who scored her second goal in as many matches. The Urbandale native is a graduate of Simpson College, where she was named to the all-Iowa Conference first team all four seasons (2008-2011).

The Menace plays Fire and Ice SC on Friday, June 13 in Columbia, Ill., at 7 p.m. Des Moines seeks payback against the Chicago Red Stars Reserves on Sunday, June 15; time and venue are not set.
