MADISON, Wis. – Sunday, June 1, 2014 – Shuffling the lineup paid dividends for the Des Moines Menace today in a 3-0 Women’s Premier Soccer League victory. The Menace defeated the Madison 56ers at Warner Soccer Park, less than 24 hours after dropping a 3-0 home match to the Chicago Red Stars Reserves.

Seeing her first action at left back, Haley Helverson used her speed to net goals in the 67th and 87th minutes. Her scores punctuated a bounce-back win whose first strike came from Nicole Peason in the 20th minute.

“We made a lot of changes, and they worked out,” said Menace head coach Kevin Schalk. “There wasn’t a lot we had to do to motivate our players. They executed, and it was a good win.”

Schalk shifted veterans Chelsea Cline and Lacey Woolf into the center backs’ spots, and he brought Autumn Hayes and Katie Hurd into the midfield mix. Hurd, who last year scored a last-minute game-winner over Madison, assisted today’s first and final goals.

Goalkeeper Maddie Vincent returned between the pipes, after sitting out yesterday. With a shutout today and a 3-1 result in the May 24 season-opener at Minnesota, Vincent boasts a 0.50 goals-against average.

Schalk likes what he sees in his 2-1-0 team.

“I think this is a great group,” the third-year coach said. “They believe in each other and they believe in the program. Everybody’s accepting their roles, doing what’s best for the team. We keep pushing forward, trying to get better with every day.”

WOMAN of the MATCH: Haley Helverson, who scored the third and fourth goals of her Menace career. Helverson, a WPSL all-conference second-teamer in 2013, prepares for her junior season at Minnesota. She is a native of West Des Moines.
