Menace ladies have international touch

 
 
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Wednesday, May 21, 2014 – Newcomers from Brazil, England, Ghana and South Africa make the 2014 Des Moines Menace women the most internationally diverse roster in the program’s three seasons.
 
Christiane Lessa is from Brazil – the host of the fast-approaching 2014 FIFA World Cup. Mercy Darkoah, Rebecca Fairfax and Stephanie Gale are English citizens; Darkoah was born in Ghana. Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart hails from South Africa, the host of the 2010 World Cup.
 
They’re part of this last group of players announced for the Menace’s 2014 Women’s Premier Soccer League season, which opens on Saturday at newcomer Minnesota. The Menace opens the home schedule on Saturday, May 31, in a WPSL matchup with the Chicago Red Stars Reserves.

 2013 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: Has a 1.03 goals-against average in two seasons. Has recorded 10 shutouts, including seven in 2013. Named to Conference-USA all-academic second team in 2013, when she was a C-USA Spirit of Service Award honoree.
 
Mercy Darkoah
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Sheffield, England
College: Bellevue (Bellevue, Neb.; NAIA)
2013 College Class: Junior
 
In College: Has 62 points career points (23 goals and 16 assists) in just 53 games played. Has nine game-winning goals, including four in 2013. All-Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference first-team member and MCAC scholar-athlete in 2013.
 
Rebecca Fairfax
Position: Defender
Hometown: Sheffield, England
College: Bellevue (Bellevue, Neb.; NAIA)
2013 College Class: Senior
 
In College: The 2012 Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Recorded 11 points in four years. In 2011, the Bruins shut out opponents in 13 matches and allowed .54 goals per game. Bellevue qualified for the national tournament each of Fairfax’s four seasons.
 
Stephanie Gale
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Hometown: North Hampton, England
College: Murray State (Murray, Ky.; NCAA Division I)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
In College: Finished career with Murray State in 2012, after earning honors at Iowa Central Community College. Was named to the all-America second team, the all-region first team and the all-academic first team while at Iowa Central. Played in 23 games at Murray. Currently a graduate assistant at Northern Iowa.
 
Autumn Hayes
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: La Crescent, Minn.
College: Southwest Minnesota State (Marshall, Minn.; NCAA Division II)
2013 College Class: Junior
 
In College: Helped SMSU to the NCAA tournament in 2013. Was named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) second team, the NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Central Region second team and the NSIC all-academic team in 2013. Has started 51 games, scored 10 goals and added three assists in her career. 
 
Christiane Lessa

Hometown: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
College: St. Thomas (Miami Gardens, Fla.; NAIA)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
Professional: Played four seasons for the Miami Kickers of the Women’s Professional Football League. Also played for teams in Brazil and Iceland before playing in the U.S.
In College: Earned Region XIV honorable mention in 2004. Named an all-region player in 2002. Is the head coach at Iowa Central Community College.
 
Madison Nelson
Position: Defender/Forward
Hometown: Woodbury, Minn.
College: Creighton (Omaha, Neb.; NCAA Division I)
2013 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: Has recorded one goal in 31 contests, making four starts.
 
Lauren Odino
Position: Forward
Hometown: Coppell, Texas
College: Iowa State (Ames, Iowa; NCAA Division I)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
In College: Scored eight goals and added three assists during her career (2006-2008). Was named to the academic all-Big 12 first team in 2007. In 2006, was the Cyclones’ Newcomer of the Year and Excellence Award winner. A three-time ISU scholar-athlete.
 
Arica Pfeil
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: West Jordan, Utah
College: Iowa Central (Fort Dodge, Iowa; NJCAA)
2013 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: Scored five goals and added four assists in 2013, when she was the team’s MVP. Named to the all-conference first team, the all-region first team and the all-America academic team in 2013.
 
Kaylin Swart
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: Port Elizabeth, South Africa
College: AIB (Des Moines, Iowa; NAIA)
 
Experience: Captained South Africa in the U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2010. Captain for South Africa’s U20 national team.
