Seasoned vets lead 2014 WPSL squad

Maggie Wylie's back -- this time as the mother of twins. Wylie (4) scored a goal in this June 8 home win -- her most recent action with the Menace.
 
 
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Monday, May 19, 2014 – Entering their third season, the Des Moines Menace women return plenty of experience.
 
Led by 13 returners, the Menace opens the 2014 Women’s Premier Soccer League season this weekend. Their lineup includes five players who were part of the team’s 2012 Women’s League Soccer championship and its run to the WPSL conference final in 2013.
 
Returning are Jordan Bishop and Maggie Wylie, who have co-captained the Menace the last two years. Goalkeeper Kira Lazenby and AIB College of Business teammates Jenna Richins and Carlan Samuelson are also back for their third season with the Menace.
 
For Kevin Schalk’s team, the season begins on the road Saturday, with a 4 p.m. match against the first-year Minnesota TwinStars. The ladies’ home opener comes Saturday, May 31 against the Chicago Red Stars Reserves. All of the team’s 2014 home games start at 4:30 p.m. at Valley Stadium.

Lindsey Bardole
Position: Forward
Hometown: Round Rock, Texas
College: Grand View (Des Moines, Iowa; NAIA)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
For the Menace: Scored four goals: one in WPSL action, one in an exhibition and two in the U.S. Open Cup. Also assisted one goal in league play.
In College: As a senior in 2011, was named to the Midwest Collegiate Conference’s first team after leading the conference with 10 assists. In her junior year, led the team with seven goals, including two game-winners in overtime. Received MCC honorable mention in 2010.
 
Jordan Bishop
Position: Defender
Hometown: Carrollton, Texas
College: Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa; NCAA Division I)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
With the Menace: The team’s 2013 Most Valuable Player and an all-conference selection. In 2013, posted two goals (sharing the team lead) and one assist, on her way to four Woman of the Match honors. In the inaugural 2012 season, scored two goals and added three assists.
Professional: Signed a short-term contract with Women’s Professional Soccer’s Boston Breakers in July 2012.
In College: As a junior in 2010, earned the Cyclones’ Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. As a senior in 2011, received Iowa State’s Iron Woman Award for dedication and hard work. Was named to the Big 12’s all-newcomer team in 2007.
 
Brenna Gray
Position: Defender

With the Menace: Returns for second season with the Menace.
In College: Has appeared in 38 matches – 17 starts. Recorded two assists in 2012.
 
Haley Helverson
Position: Defender
Hometown: West Des Moines, Iowa
College: Minnesota (Minneapolis, Minn.; NCAA Division I)
2013 College Class: Sophomore
 
With the Menace: An all-conference second-teamer in 2013, when she scored two goals and added one assist in 2013. Named Woman of the Match two times (May 18 and July 13). Her two goals came in the second half of a 4-1 playoff win at top-seed Ohio on July 13. Shared the team’s Community Relations Award with Gopher teammate Mackenzie Misel.
In College: Finished 2013 with four goals and two assists – second on team in points (10). Her second game-winning goal sent Minnesota to the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, was named to the Big Ten’s all-freshmen team. Minnesota has shut out opponents 14 times over last two seasons; Helverson has been on the field for all of them.
 
Katie Hurd
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Gretna, Neb.
College: Augustana College (Sioux Falls, S.D.; NCAA Division II)
2013 College Class: Senior
 
With the Menace: Scored game-winning goal and named Woman of the Match in Menace’s 2-1 win over Madison 56ers on June 8, 2013. Was named Woman of the Match again on July 14.
In College: Scored two goals while assisting five for a 2013 team that set  a school record in points (113). Was named to all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) first team and academic all-NSIC in 2013.
 
Michelle Landeiro
Position: Midfield
Hometown: Boca Raton, Fla.
College: Iowa Central (Fort Dodge, Iowa; NJCAA)
2013 College Class: Sophomore
 
With the Menace: Returns for second season with the Menace.
In College: Tallied 13 points in 16 games in 2013. Scored three goals and added seven assists. Was named to all-region XI second team in 2013.
 
Kira Lazenby
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: Payson, Utah
College: Northwest Missouri State (Maryville, Mo.; NCAA Division II)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
With the Menace: Returns for third season. Was the minutes leader in 2012 and made an appearance in three of four home matches in 2013.
In College: Started all 20 games as a keeper in 2009 at Northwestern Missouri State, setting record shutouts in single season (eight) and earned second team all-conference. In 2008, scored first career goal. Was two-time NJCAA All-American at Iowa Western Community College and ranked in the top ten nationally in Goals Against Average (0.260) in 2006, before transferring.
 
Bryanna Mongan
Position: Defender

With the Menace: A product of the Menace Academy who has trained with the team all three years.
 
Jenna Richins
Position: Defender
Hometown: Lehi, Utah.
College: AIB College of Business (Des Moines, Iowa; NAIA)
2013 College Class: Sophomore
 
With the Menace: Returns for third year. Has scored three goals, including the second goal in a 3-2 win over WSA Winnipeg in 2013.
In College: Tallied two assists in 17 games in 2013. Has a career total of two goals and two assists.
 
Carlan Samuelson
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Farmington, Utah
College: AIB College of Business (Des Moines, Iowa; NAIA)
2013 College Class: Junior
 
With the Menace: Has eight points over two seasons – three goals and two assists all scored in the 2012 season.
In College: A two-time Midwest Collegiate Conference honorable-mention selection. Scored seven goals and assisted three more in 2013. Led the inaugural Eagles with 22 points (10 goals and two assists) in 2012. 
 
Holly Winter
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: West Des Moines, Iowa
College: Grand View (Des Moines, Iowa, NAIA)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
With the Menace: Scored two goals in 2013, and was named Woman of the Match on July 5.
 
In College: Was named to all-Midwest Collegiate Conference first team three times and once to the academic all-MCC squad. Finished career in 2010 with 23 points in 42 games. Tallied eight goals (five game-winners) and seven assists. Was a finalist for the 2009 NAIA “All That’s Right in Sports” Award.
 
Lacey Woolf
Position: Forward
Hometown: Ankeny, Iowa
College: Kansas (Lawrence, Kan., NCAA Division I)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
With the Menace: A late addition to the 2013 Menace.
 
In College: Part of the Jayhawks’ first NCAA Tournament berth in 2001, and their run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2003, her senior year. Completed her Kansas career with six points in 61 matches (35 starts) spanning three seasons, after spending her freshman season at Nebraska.
 
 
Maggie Wylie
Position: Forward
Hometown: Sioux City, Iowa
College: Morningside (Sioux City, Iowa, NAIA)
2013 College Class: Graduate
 
With the Menace: Scored the first two goals in Menace history. Has four goals and four assists in nine games with the Menace. With husband B.J. Wylie, is the mother of twins born during the offseason.
 
In College: Set a school mark with 170 points, on 63 goals and a school-record 44 assists. Was named a four-time all-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) member, a two-time NAIA honorable mention all-American, a two-time Daktronics-NAIA scholar-athlete, and a first team academic all-American. The 2007 GPAC Player of the Year, she returned for a final college season in 2011.
