Menace returns 10 for 2014 season

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Thursday, May 8 – Returning for his fifth season with the Des Moines Menace, defender Brandon Fricke headlines a long list of players coming back to the team for the 2014 Premier Development League season.
 
The Menace’s captain a year ago, Fricke was named to the all-PDL team in 2013. Fricke, a Grimes native who plays collegiately at Butler, is one of 10 returners. Nico Wright, the team’s leading scorer a year ago, also returns for a team looking to improve upon a 6-6-2 finish.
 
Des Moines is less than a week from its first action at Valley Stadium – a 7:30 p.m. match on Wednesday, May 14. In the second round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Menace clashes with the rival Real Colorado Foxes. This extends the Menace’s streak of five straight berths in the national tournament (nine appearances overall).
 
On Saturday (May 10), the Menace hosts a preseason exhibition at Cownie Soccer Park. Admission and parking are free for the 7:30 matchup with Imperio, the defending champion of the Des Moines International League.
 
Newcomers to the Menace will be announced next week, as the team ramps up for Wednesday’s Open Cup battle and the May 17 regular-season opener in Springfield, Mo.

Charlie Bales
Position: Defender

With the Menace: Has played in a total of 16 games for Des Moines; his 2013 season was cut short due to injury. In 2012, scored two goals and tallied three assists.
In college: Redshirted his senior year due to injury. In 2012, played in 19 games for the Leathernecks, accumulating four assists and one goal during the season. In 2011, named Summit League Tournament MVP and Summit League Defender of the Year. Named to the league’s first team in 2011 and 2012, receiving second team all-region nods each year.
 
Alec Bartlett
Position: Defender
Hometown: Overland Park, Kan.

With the Menace: As a late-season addition in 2013, started and played a full 90 minutes in the regular season finale against St. Louis on July 20. In the 3-3 draw, committed three fouls and picked up a caution.
In college: Played in 20 games in 2013. Scored one goal and assisted one more for the Bulldogs, while helping secure four shutout victories, including a 1-0 win over 14th-ranked New Mexico.
 
Jordan Becker
Position: Midfield
Hometown: Pocomoke City, Md.
College: Maryland-Baltimore County (Baltimore, Md.; NCAA Division I)

With the Menace: Collected three starts in 2013, playing the full 90 minutes in two games. His lone shot of the season came in a 5-1 win at Kansas City on June 5.
In College: In 2013,Becker started 19 games, ending his season with one goal and four assists. His goal was the game-winner over Navy in overtime on Sept. 14. The UMBC Retrievers finished the season ranked fifth in the nation, but were ousted in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16 in a penalty kick shoot-out.

With the Menace: Returns for his fifth season with his hometown team. In 2013, earned the honors of All-PDL, All-Central Conference, and the U.S. Open Cup’s Round II Player of the Round for his game-winning goal over Minnesota United FC on May 21. Played in 13 PDL games last season, scoring twice on three shots for Des Moines. Logged the team’s third-highest minutes played with 1147 and was named Defender of the Year. Has logged 3,158 minutes in his Menace career; scored three goals and added one assist.
In College: Played in 20 games, scoring three goals including one game-winner. Named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 11), Academic All-American and Capital One Academic All-District V University Division Men’s Soccer team, 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic Team, All-Tournament Team at Akron in 2012. Has started 52 games over career; totaled 12 points.
 
Sean Hoek
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Little Rock, Ark.

With the Menace: Played 532 minutes in 11 matches last year. Scored once -- the final goal of the Menace's 2013 season, in  a 3-3 draw with St. Louis on July 20. A leader for the Menace USASA team that last fall clinched a berth in the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
In College: In 2012, played in 20 games for UNCP. Scored nine goals, including two game-winners. Named to the Second Team All-Southeast Region. In 2011, played in 11 games and scored four goals, and was named to the all-tournament team.
 
 
Lubos Kubik
Position: Midfield
Hometown: Pardubice, Czech Republic

With the Menace: Shared the Menace’s 2013 Community Relations Award with teammate Zev Taublieb. Registered a start in 2013 in a 2-1 exhibition win over Twin Cities BK on June 29. In 2012, saw action in the Menace’s exhibition against the Minnesota Stars after joining the PDL side from the Menace Academy. His father, Lubos Kubik, played professionally for the Chicago Fire teams coached by Menace head coach Mike Jeffries. The senior Kubik was an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team.
In College: Named to Pennsylvania State Conference’s second team each of his first two college seasons. In 2013, played in 17 games, starting 14 of those, and finished with one goal and three assists.
 
Dylan Lax
Position: Midfield/Defender

With the Menace: Only player of the 2014 squad to play in all 14 PDL matches. Ended with a team-high 1,191 minutes played. Lone point of the season came on an assist in a 5-1 win at Kansas City on June 5.
In College: In 2013, saw action in 19 games while starting in 13 of those. Scored his first college goal in a 3-2 loss to Akron during the NCAA tournament. In 2012, played 90 minutes in the 1-0 national-championship win over Georgetown.
 
Javi Lopez
Position: Defender

With the Menace: Returns after a summer layoff from the Menace. In 2012, appeared in 15 games, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Kansas City on June 9. His 1335 minutes played led the team.
In College: Transferred from Marshalltown Community College to Lynn in the 2013 offseason. Played and started in 18 games for the Fighting Knights. Scored five goals and one assist in 2013. Tied for fourth highest point total on the team. Helped his squad to six shutouts. Named to NSCAA All-South Region Team and Sunshine State Conference second team. Lynn was ranked No. 1 in the nation early in the season.
 
Jonny Macadam
Position: Midfield
Hometown: Glasgow, Scotland
College: Grand View (Des Moines, Iowa; NAIA)

Seasons with the Menace: 2011-2012, 2014
 
With the Menace: Makes a return to the field after interning with the Menace in 2013. Played in the 2011 and 2012 seasons and has one point in ten games played.
In College: In 2013, led his college team with 30 points, scoring 12 goals and assisting on six goals. Tallied five game-winning goals in the 2013 season for the Vikings. Named Midwest Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Year. Also named an NAIA all-American. Collected 44 goals and 28 assists during his college career. The Vikings finished the regular season ranked No. 1 before losing in NAIA Round of 16 to eventual champion Martin Methodist (Tenn.).
 
Nico Wright
Position: Forward
Hometown: St. Catherine, Jamaica
College: Fairleigh Dickinson (Teaneck, N.J.; NCAA Division I)

With the Menace: Returns as Menace’s 2013 leading scorer. Tallied three goals in 12 games for Des Moines. Recipient of the team’s golden-boot award after scoring all three of his goals against the Kansas City Brass.
In College: In 2013, led his team in points with 11, on three goals and a team-high five assists. Started in 11 games while playing in a total of 18. In 2012, Fairleigh Dickinson advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s round of 16.
