Soccer Events Calendar, fall 2013

Red-clad supporters cheered on the Menace on May 28 at Sporting Park in Kansas City -- the site of a couple key October matches on our fall calendar.
 
 
Menace fans, you can get your soccer fix this fall, and we invite you to join us for these events:
 
 
Drake men vs. Notre Dame
When: Wednesday, AUG. 21 at 7 p.m.
Where: Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines
Competition: NCAA Division-I preseason match
Details: Last fall, the Irish finished the regular season atop the national rankings before falling in the NCAA tournament’s third round to eventual champ Indiana in double OT. The Bulldogs, playing their only exhibition, return eight starters from a team that went 2-2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Tickets are $2 to $5.
Final score: Drake 0, No. 7 Notre Dame 2
 
Drake women vs. South Dakota State
When: Friday, SEPT. 13 at 6 p.m.
Where: Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines
Competition: NCAA Division-I match
Details:  The Bulldogs enjoyed a banner 2012 season (12-5-2, 3-1-2 MVC) that ended just one win short of the conference title. This match comes on “Menace Night,” when fans are encouraged to wear their Menace red and join Menace Academy players, coaches and their families to cheer on the Bulldogs. Tickets are $2 to $5.
Final score: Drake 0, South Dakota State 1
 
Drake women vs. Iowa State
When: Sunday, OCT. 6 at 1 p.m.
Where: Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines
Competition: NCAA Division-I match
Details:  The Menace is well represented in this in-state clash. Drake goalkeepers Kalena Litch and Andrea Swanson have suited up for the Menace women; Swanson, a transfer from Iowa State, reunites with her former team. Menace alumni on the Cyclones’ roster include Haley Albert, Jenny Dominguez (an all-America second-teamer in 2012), Emily Goldstein, Brittany Morgan, and Alyssa Williamson.
Final score: Drake 1, Iowa State 1 (2 OT)
 
United States Men’s National Team vs. Jamaica
When: Friday, OCT. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
Competition: 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier
Details: Here’s your chance to cheer on our national team, just a short drive from Des Moines. In USMNT’s final home qualifying match for next year’s World Cup, the team battles Jamaica as part of a six-team Hexagonal. The group’s top three teams advance to Brazil’s 2014 World Cup.
Final score: USA 2, Jamaica 0
 
 
Doubleheader: AIB vs. Grand View
When: Wednesday, OCT. 16 at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men)
Where: Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines
Competition: NAIA regular-season matches
Details:  Des Moines’ NAIA programs go head-to-head, one year after Grand View dealt an unfriendly welcome to the AIB Eagles’ inaugural teams. Last October, the Viking women trounced AIB, 17-0, on the way to a second-place finish in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. The Grand View men racked up an 11-0 margin in two wins over their intra-city foes. Scoring-threat Jonny Macadam (2011-12 Menace) returns for his senior season at Grand View, the MCC’s three-time defending champion. Nicholas Poulter, a defender who saw time with the 2013 Menace, is a senior leader for an AIB team that finished 9-11 in 2012.
Final scores: Grand View women 2, AIB 1; Grand View men 5, AIB 0
 
 
Sporting Kansas City vs. CD Olimpia (Honduras)
When: Wednesday, OCT. 23 at 7 p.m.
Where: Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
Competition: CONCACAF Champions League
Details: You can get discounted tickets through the Menace, and a bus trip is in the works (More details to come). This is the final group-stage match for Sporting KC – one of five Major League Soccer teams represented in this tournament that features the top 24 teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean region competing for a berth in the 2014 World Cup. The group stage divides the 24 teams into eight groups of three; SKC was drawn into Group 2, joined by Nicaragua’s Real Esteli FC and CD Olimpia, Honduras’ most successful team.

Drake men vs. Bradley
When: Saturday, OCT. 26 at 7 p.m.
Where: Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines
Competition: NCAA Division-I match
Details:  The Bulldogs close their home schedule on “Menace Night.” Drake’s Alec Bartlett and Kyle Whigham joined the Menace late in the 2013 Premier Development League season. Bradley goalkeeper Brian Billings was a member of the 2012 Menace.
 
Final score: Drake 2, Bradley 1

ABOUT THE MENACE: The Des Moines Menace provides the highest level of soccer in Iowa. In its 20th season, the Menace men’s side competes in the 64-team United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (PDL). The Menace’s women’s team played in the 2013 Women’s Premier Soccer League playoff, after debuting as the Women’s League Soccer 2012 champions. The Menace teams play their home matches in a fun, family-friendly environment at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. The organization promotes a healthy lifestyle through its popular youth programs, including the Menace Academy (select soccer for ages 9-19), camps, clinics, Junior Menace and tournaments.
