MADISON, Wis. – Friday, July 5, 2013 – With a late goal in each half, the Madison 56ers rallied for a 2-1 Women’s Premier Soccer League win over the Des Moines Menace tonight at Breese Stevens Stadium.
The Menace surrendered goals in the 41st and 85th minutes, relinquishing a lead staked by Holly Winter’s score less than 16 minutes into the match. Madison turned the tables on Des Moines. On June 8, the home-team Menace rallied from an early deficit to beat the 56ers by an identical scoreline.
In a scramble for the fourth and final playoff spot in the WPSL’s Midwest Division, these teams share identical 4-3-0 records. The Menace closes its regular season at Quad City (3-3-0) tomorrow at 3 p.m., while the 56ers host Fort Wayne F.C. (0-4-0) in their regular-season finale.
“Right now we’re hanging on by the skin of our teeth,” said Menace head coach Kevin Schalk. “Our goal’s to make the playoffs. We’ll be ready to play tomorrow.”
Schalk’s side seeks its first WPSL win since back-to-back triumphs on June 8-9. The Menace is out for payback, after falling 2-1 to Quad City on June 22 at Valley Stadium – the ladies’ first home loss in 10 matches spanning two seasons.
“It put a bad taste in our mouth,” Schalk said of that loss to the team’s in-state foe. “Our kids thought they were the better team. Hopefully, they get it together. We’ll see tomorrow. We gotta go down there and get the win.”
WOMAN of the MATCH presented by Seneca Companies: Holly Winter, who notched her second goal of the season. Winter is a Waukee native and Grand View University grad.
UP NEXT: The Menace finishes the WPSL regular season tomorrow against the Quad City Eagles. Pleasant Valley High School is the site of the 3 p.m. match.
