East sweeps all-star games

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, June 29, 2013 – The East girls and boys teams swept the 2013 Iowa high school all-star games today at Valley Stadium.

The East girls squeaked by the West all-stars, winning a 3-2 penalty-kick shootout following a match that was tied 1-1 after 80 minutes of regulation play. The East boys won more comfortably, pouncing to a 4-1 halftime lead and downing the West, 7-2.

In the girls’ match, the West side opened today’s scoring. Council Bluffs Lewis Central’s Brooke Jensen scored in the 15th minute. The Western Illinois recruit converted a pass from Waukee’s Taylor Woods. The East countered eight minutes into the second half, when Madison Pottebaum from Bondurant-Farrar scored. Her goal was assisted by Sammi Shepard from Cedar Rapids Xavier, a program that’s won eight consecutive state titles.

Butler-bound goalkeeper Jayne Heinrich (Iowa City West) blocked the West’s last two shootout attempts. Connecting on PK attempts for the East were Chelsea Christensen (Waterloo Columbus), Jessica Wooldridge (Center Point-Urbanda) and Laura Schwickerath (Cedar Falls).

Schwickerath, a midfielder, was named the Most Valuable Player for the girls’ East-West All-Star Cup.

The East boys went on a scoring tirade, led by cross-town rivals who competed four weeks ago in the state’s Class 3A final. Fernando Pacheco from champion Iowa City High collected two goals in the first half; Paris Martins from Iowa City West scored twice in the second frame.

Also scoring for the East were Isaac Frisch (Cedar Rapids Xavier), Bo Vitale (Mt. Pleasant) and Austin Bergstrom (Cedar Rapids Washington).

The West’s goals came from Des Moines Roosevelt’s Max Fernandes, who found the net in the 31st and 78th minutes

Pacheco was named the MVP of the boys’ East-West All-Star Cup. He was the 2013 Player of the Year for the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Mississippi Division, after racking up 19 goals and 10 assists in 16 matches for the state champ.

Presented by Soccer Connections and hosted by the Des Moines Menace, the games were organized by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. The all-star action opened a tripleheader capped off by a 7:30 p.m. exhibition between Menace (Premier Development League) and the Twin Cities BK Voyageurs.
