Player Spotlight: Katie Hurd

Menace Intern Jordan Guy will bring you a new player spotlight each week of the 2013 season. This week’s women's spotlight features midfielder Katie Hurd. Posted June 11, 2013.

With only minutes left in the game, Katie Hurd decided that a tie just wasn’t good enough. So she stepped up and did something about it.

Hurd’s chip over the Madison keeper in the 90th minute was the difference in Des Moines’ first ever Women’s Premier Soccer League victory. Hurd’s clutch performance earned her a nod as Women of the Match for the Menace’s June 8th bout with Madison.

For Hurd, the moment was unbelievable.

“It was bouncing around in the box and it just came to me,” said Hurd. “When it went in, I was shocked at first; I thought I’d shot it over.”

Even if the shot had been high, the Augustana College (S.D.) senior would have still been happy just to be with the Menace.

“I wanted to play soccer at a high level over the summer and my college coach (Brandon Barkus) knew that and told me about Des Moines,” said Hurd of her choice to try out for the Menace. “It’s really exciting here. The fans here make it special.”

Following up her hero-worthy performance on Saturday, Hurd started in Des Moines’ match the next day against rival Kansas City. Hurd played most of the game and had two shots on goal, helping the Menace to a thrilling 4-0 pummeling to end the weekend.

But the exciting environment the Menace has obtained isn’t enough for Hurd’s hard-working approach.

“The competition isn’t going to fall off by any means,” said Hurd. “I want us to go with a strong mentality and get a championship in our new conference.”

Hurd plans to attend paramedic school after graduating from Augustana College and hopes to continue playing soccer competitively for as long as she can.

The Menace women return to Valley Stadium this Saturday for an exhibition with the Iowa Rush. The 4:30 women’s match precedes a 7:30 Menace men’s game against arch-rival Thunder Bay. The Menace celebrates Blackout Night at Valley on Saturday, with everyone wearing black getting $5 tickets.
