Player Spotlight: Andrea Swanson

Menace Intern Jordan Guy will bring you a new player spotlight each week of the 2013 season. Our first women's spotlight features goalkeeper Andrea Swanson. Posted June 7, 2013.

Despite being just 20 years old, goalkeeper Andrea Swanson is a veteran leader of the Des Moines Menace women’s team.

Starting in net for the Menace in its two matches this season, Swanson has been a stable backdrop for a Des Moines team that moved to a more competitive league this off season after cruising through the Women’s League Soccer  last season.

The team’s humble, yet confident mentality mirrors that of Swanson.

“I’ve always been competitive, so I guess you could say I’m self-motivated,” said Swanson. “I was given an ability and I don’t want to waste the opportunity.”

The Drake junior is entering her second season with Des Moines and seeking to solidify her starting position after being one of four net-minders to see playing time last season.

But Swanson had Menace experiences well before she joined the team last season.

Growing up in Clive, Iowa, the young keeper attended many Menace games with her family and friends.

“I’ve always been a Menace fan. I grew up watching the men and always thought it’d be awesome to play for them,” said Swanson of her childhood endeavors. “But it was a men’s team so that wasn’t an option then.”

When the Menace announced the creation of a women’s team, Swanson was quick to jump at the opportunity to live out a childhood dream so near to her hometown.

“The support I’m able to get from family and friends coming out to the games has to be my favorite part of being so close to home,” said Swanson. “There really isn’t anything I don’t like about it.”

With more than a week of practice since Des Moines’ last game, Swanson is ready to see game action.

“I’m feeling pretty confident. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and we’ve gotten the team much more organized.”

The Menace will return to Swanson’s high school field in Valley Stadium this Saturday for a showdown with the Madison 56ers. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 with a men’s game following at 7:30.
