KANSAS CITY, Kan.  – Sunday, May 26, 2013 – Making its Women’s Premier Soccer League debut, the Des Moines Menace dropped a 3-0 decision to the Kansas City Shock tonight at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

In this battle of WPSL newcomers, the Shock scored late in the first half and tacked on insurance goals in the 50th and 64th minutes. After cruising to the 2012 Women’s League Soccer championship, the Menace received a wake-up call tonight. Des Moines did not capitalize on its opportunities; Kansas City (2-0-0) did.

“I thought we dominated the whole game,” said second-year head coach Kevin Schalk. “We had plenty of shots, plenty of possessions. Just couldn’t put one into the back of the net. It wasn’t for lack of effort.

“We were unlucky tonight. Our kids got frustrated. Overall, I think we’re very talented. We’re going to score goals. We just need to be a little more disciplined in the decisions we make. I think we’ll be fine.”

The Menace has plenty of time to regroup. The team’s next action comes in back-to-back home matches on June 8-9, including a rematch with Kansas City. Des Moines’ next road action comes in the Women’s U.S. Open Cup, set for late June in Kansas City.

WOMEN of the MATCH, presented by Seneca Companies: Co-captainsJordan Bishop and Maggie (Kukuk) Wylie, who controlled the midfield tonight. “They make us go. Their leadership is key,” Schalk said of Bishop and Wylie.

UP NEXT: The Menace is off until home matches on June 8 and 9. On Saturday, June 8, the women host the Madison 56ers at Valley Stadium on Youth Soccer Night; The Menace men play Springfield in the second half of a doubleheader. On Sunday, June 9, the Menace hosts Kansas City at Teamwork Acres in West Des Moines. All women’s home matches start at 4:30 p.m.
