WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Thursday, May 23, 2013 – With a game-winning header, Des Moines Menace defender Taylor Diem earned a selection to the Premier Development League Team of the Week, announced today by the United Soccer Leagues.

The Middleton, Wis., native’s first goal in two seasons with the Menace was the lone score in a 1-0 victory over WSA Winnipeg on May 18 at Valley Stadium.

But Diem’s biggest contribution may have come on the defensive end of the pitch. Des Moines’ back line suffocated the Canadian attack. The Menace allowed only three shots for the game, including only one on goal and none from less than 25 yards out.

Winnipeg’s only real scoring opportunity came in the 90th minute, when Winnipeg’s Moses Danto broke free on a counter attack. Diem chased down Danto for a clean tackle, stealing the ball and neutralizing the visitors’ final chance to even the match.

The recent Regis (Colo.) grad is the lone Heartland Division player named to the PDL Team of the Week.Diem was also instrumental in a 1-0 shutout of Minnesota United FC on Tuesday (May 21), in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Menace defender Brandon Fricke headed in the only score in this match, setting up a showdown at Sporting KC (Major League Soccer) on May 28. Des Moines forward Jimmy Tulloch assisted both goals in the team’s 1-0 wins.
