Menace announces more new faces

 
 
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Thursday, May 9, 2013 – The players continue to trickle into training camp, as Des Moines Menace head coach Mike Jeffries readies his team for Saturday’s Premier Development League opener at Springfield (Mo.).
 
After announcing 10 newcomers last week and announcing eight returners the week before, we introduce more new players looking to make an impact in their first season in Des Moines. Also on the list is Drake standout Michael Thaden, a West Des Moines Valley grad who played for the Menace in parts of the 2008-2010 seasons.
 
Jeffries’ first Menace team will play twice at Valley Stadium next week. Des Moines’s first home action comes Wednesday, May 15, hosting Madison (National Premier Soccer League) in the first round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
 
The team’s regular-season home opener comes in the form of a (Saturday) May 18 men’s-women’s doubleheader with WSA Winnipeg at Valley Stadium.

Nick Arpey
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Iowa City, Iowa
College: Colgate (Hamilton, New York, NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Junior
 
In College: Saw action in 19 games in 2012, contributing two assists. In 2011 played in all 22 of the team’s games, and helped led the team to the Patriot League Championship Title. In 2010, played in 17 games and contributed one assist. Earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll all three years.
 
 
Jordan Becker
Position: Forward/Midfielder
Hometown: Pocomoke City, Md.
College: Maryland-Baltimore County (Baltimore, Md.; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Freshman
 
In College:  Scored one goal and assisted two more in 2012. Was named the first America’s East Rookie of the Week in the 2011 season. In his college debut, scored the only goal to lead his team to victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the season opener.  
 
 
Karl Chester
Position: Forward
Hometown: Kathleen, Ga.
College: Alabama- Birmingham (Birmingham, Ala.,;NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Redshirt Freshman
 
In College: Played 19 games, starting 15, in 2012. Scored five goals and assisted three more, earning the third most points on the team. Played three games in the 2011 season before he was knocked out by injury and took a medical redshirt. In high school, led his high school team to several state and regional championships. Took his team to the USYSA National Championship in 2010 and 2011, winning the tournament in 2010. Scored four goals in the 2010 championship, earning him the tournament MVP award.
 
 
Garrett Halfhill
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va.
College: Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: In 2012 started in 21 of the 22 games played for Xavier. Scored one goal in 14 attempts. In 2011 came off the bench in 20 games. Scored a goal in the Atlantic 10 Championship Final to bring the score level against George Washington and send the game into a shootout, which Xavier won.
 
 
Chris Harmon
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Hometown: Downingtown, Penn.
College: Old Dominion (Norfolk, Virginia; NCAA Division I)
 
In College: In 2012, finished second for Old Dominion for total number of points, with 24, coming on nine goals and six assists. Named First Team NSCAA All-Region, First Team all-conference, and named to teams of the week by College Sports Madness and TopDrawer.com. Ranked 26th nationally in points per game, averaging 1.50 points. From 2009 to 201, played in 48 games and scored 12 goals and eight assists.
 
 
Eric Osswald
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: Powell, Ohio
College: Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: Recently transferred to Xavier from South Florida, where he played in 12 games last fall. Allowed 14 goals in 2012. With his new team, played 57 minutes in the Muskateers’ 1-0 spring exhibition win over defending national champion Indiana on April 5.
 
 
Mark Pais
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: St. Louis, Mo.
College: University of Tulsa (Tulsa, Okla.; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Senior
 
In College:  Earned eight shutouts in 2012, his only season at Tulsa. Prior to joining Tulsa played for St. Louis University. Started 15 out of 19 games, for over 1,650 minutes. Made 82 saves and earned five shutouts.
 
 
Zac Portillos
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Aurora, Colo.
College: University of Akron (Akron, Ohio; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Junior
 
In College: In 2012 played in five matches. In 2011 played in 16 games, starting five. In 2010, as a freshman at the University of Washington, played in 17 games, with 13 starts. Scored two game-winning goals and was named the school’s Rookie of the Year.
 
 
Nicholas Poulter
Position: Defender
Hometown: London, England
College: AIB College of Business (Des Moines, Iowa; NAIA)
2012 College Class: Junior
 
In College: A mainstay in the defense of the inaugural Eagles team that finished with a 9-11 mark in 2012. Assisted four goals. Came to AIB from Iowa Central Community College, where he earned a spot on the NJCAA All-Region 11 second team in 2011.
 
 
Stephen Roberson
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Hometown: Madison, Miss.
College: University of Tulsa (Tulsa, Okla.; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: In his second year with Tulsa, played 20 games, starting 15 games. In those games contributed five assists. In his freshman year, played 11 games, starting eight. Scored goals and four assists. Was selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and was named “Man of the Match” in two games for Tulsa.
 
 
Zev Taublieb
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Malibu, Calif.
College: Valparaiso (Valparaiso, Ind.; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
In College: Played in six games in 2012. In 2011, played nine games, starting five, until he suffered a season ending injury. Named to Horizon League All-Newcomer Team.  Played with former Menace goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck (2009), who is a rookie with FC Dallas (MLS).
 
 
Michael Thaden
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Clive, Iowa
College: Drake (Des Moines, Iowa; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Redshirt Senior
 
In College: Named to the 2012 NSCAA All-Midwest Region second team and the Missouri Valley Conference’s first team. Started all 21 matches of his senior season, leading the team in goals (seven) and points (17).
 
 
Robby Thomas

ABOUT THE MENACE: The Des Moines Menace provides the highest level of soccer in Iowa. Entering its 20th season, the Menace men’s side competes in the 65-team United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (PDL). The Menace’s women’s team enters the Women’s Premier Soccer League in 2013, after debuting as the Women’s League Soccer 2012 champions. The Menace teams play their home matches in a fun, family-friendly environment at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. The organization promotes a healthy lifestyle through its popular youth programs, including the Menace Academy (select soccer for ages 9-19), camps, clinics, Junior Menace and tournaments.
