WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Wednesday, May 1, 2013 – Opening Night will come three days earlier than the Des Moines Menace had originally scheduled for its 20th season.
The Des Moines Menace’s first 2013 home action will be on Wednesday, May 15. In the first round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Premier Development League team hosts the Madison 56ers at Valley Stadium. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
The United States Soccer Foundation announced the matchups today for the 100th annual event, recognized as the organization’s national championship. The tournament is open to all amateur and professional teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer, though only 68 teams qualify.
Des Moines’ regular-season home schedule begins on Saturday, May 18, as part of a men’s-women’s doubleheader with WSA Winnipeg. The team opens the PDL season at Springfield (Mo.) on May 11.
In its fourth-straight Open Cup appearance the Menace meets Madison’s National Premier Soccer League squad for the first time. A year ago, Des Moines met another Wisconsin-based NPSL team in the cup’s opening round, winning 3-1 in an overtime thriller in Milwaukee. The Menace, whose 2012 Open Cup run ended in a 2-0 second-round home loss to pro side Minnesota Stars FC, carries an all-time Open Cup mark of 8-7.
The 56ers are the defending champions of the NPSL’s Midwest-Central division. They made it to the league’s 2012 national semifinals, taking third place. This is the club’s sixth appearance in the Open Cup (1988-1991, 2011). In their most recent cup, the 56ers lost, 2-0, in the second round to a Chicago Fire PDL team that got past the Menace, 1-0, one week earlier.
These clubs will meet twice this season on the women’s side, with their teams competing in the Midwest Division of the Women’s Premier Soccer League. In WPSL action, they meet June 8 in West Des Moines and July 5 in Madison.
Des Moines has qualified for eight Open Cups – the second-highest total among PDL teams, trailing only the Michigan Bucks (10). This time around, the Menace’s berth came by virtue of earning one of the league’s 16 spots, determined by 2012 records.
Coming off an 8-5-3 season, the Menace heads into 2013 with a new general manager and a new head coach.
Matt Homonoff became the team’s GM in November, making the move from FC Edmonton (NASL); he spent seven seasons in Major League Soccer, in D.C. United’s front office.
Mike Jeffries, who has more than 20 years’ experience as a professional player and coach, will lead the team on the field. Announced as the head coach in January, he has spent more than 10 years on the MLS sidelines, including three years as the head coach in Dallas (2001-03). Jeffries had a couple stints as an assistant coach with the Chicago Fire, which won the U.S. Open Cup in 1998 and 2000, and the MLS Cup in 1998.
