2013 Menace to feature eight returners

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Friday, April 26, 2013 – New Des Moines Menace head coach Mike Jeffries will have eight  returning players on the roster for the team’s 20th season.
 
This group includes three Iowans who have spent multiple seasons with the Menace – Charlie Bales, Brandon Fricke and Husref Jupic. Taylor Diem, Cameron Duckworth, Lubos Kubik, Jeff Kyei and Javi Lopez return for their second years in Des Moines.
 
The Menace’s Premier Development League season begins at Springfield (Mo.) on Saturday, May 11. The team’s regular-season home opener comes one week later, in a May 18 men’s-women’s doubleheader with WSA Winnipeg at Valley Stadium. Des Moines’ first home action could come as early as May 14 or May 15, based on the draw for the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Charlie Bales
Position: Defender
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
College: Western Illinois (Macomb, Ill.; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Junior
 
With the Menace: After returning from injury in 2012, played seven games for the Menace, scoring two goals and three assists. Was named Man of the Match two times. In 2011, played 504 minutes in eight appearances for the Menace.
In College: In 2012, Bales played in 19 games, contributing four assists and one goal, for the second most points on the Leathernecks. Was named second team all-region, First Team All Summit League, Academic All-Summit League, and Western Illinois’ Scholar-Athlete of the Week (Nov. 12). In 2011, was named to the First Team All-League and the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year. Was also named the MVP of the Summit League Tournament, after converting the game-winning penalty kick in the final.
 
 
Taylor Diem
Position: Defender
Hometown: Middleton, Wis.
College: Regis (Denver, Colorado, NCAA Division II)
2012 College Class: Senior (May 2013 graduate)
 
With the Menace: As a mainstay in the Menace’s 2012 defense, played 975 minutes in 13 games, contributing one assist.
In College: After redshirting for Hofstra University in 2008, started once in six matches in 2009 before transferring to Regis. In 2012, was named to the Daktronics All-American First Team and the NSCAA All-America Second Team. The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Defensive 2012 Player of the Year, he was a member of the All-RMAC First Team.
 
 
Cameron Duckworth
Position: Forward
Hometown: Waukee, Iowa
College: Iowa Central Community College (Fort Dodge, Iowa; NJCAA)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
With the Menace: Played for the Menace in 2012 in the exhibition game against Minnesota Stars FC.
In College: Was named First Team All-Region XI, First Team All-American by the NSCAA, and Second Team All-American by the NJCAA. Scored 19 goals and earned 46 points, setting new school records, and bringing his career totals to 26 goals and 67 points.
 
 
Brandon Fricke
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Grimes, Iowa
College: Butler University (Indianapolis, Ind.; NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Junior
 
With the Menace: In 2012, played in 14 games for the Menace. Score one goal and one assist, spent time as the team’s captain and was named Man of the Match on two occasions. Played in nine matches in 2010 and 2011.
In College: As a junior, started in 17 games, scoring one goal and two assists. Scored the game-winning goal against IUPUI. Was named to the 2012 Atlantic-10 Conference All-Academic Team and to the Akron Tournament’s all-tourney team. As a sophomore, played in 16 matches for the Bulldogs, starting 15. Recorded his first collegiate goal against Western Illinois and was named to the 11-player Capital One Academic All-District V University Division Men’s Soccer Team.
 
 
Husref Jupic
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Johnston, Iowa
College: Western Illinois (Macomb, Ill., NCAA Division I)
2012 College Class: Senior
Date of Birth: November 7, 1990
Played with the Menace in 2010-2012
 
With the Menace: An ACL injury in the Menace’s May 22 Open Cup match ended a promising 2012 season. Was a hat-trick hero on May 12, notching three goals in 12 second-half minutes of the team’s 4-1 win over St. Louis. Was named PDL Player of the Week. On May 15, scored Des Moines’ lone regulation goal in a 3-1 OT win over Milwaukee in the Open Cup’s first round. Scored two goals in 21 matches in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. 2009 graduate of Hoover High School and the Menace Academy, Jupic was the Iowa High School Player of the Year as a senior.
In College: Redshirted his 2012 season with Western Illinois. In his first three years played in 49 matches at Western. Earned a spot on the 2011 All-Summit-League Second Team after recording three goals and three assists.
 
 
Lubos Kubik
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Pardubice, Czech Republic
College: California University of Pennsylvania (California, Pennsylvania, NCAA Division II)
2012 College Class: Freshman
 
With the Menace: In 2012 saw action in the Menace exhibition game against the Minnesota Stars, joining the PDL side from the Menace Academy. His father, Lubos Kubik, played professionally for the Chicago Fire teams coached by incoming Menace head coach Mike Jeffries. The senior Kubik was an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Team.
In College: His freshman year for the Vulcans played in 18 games, starting 15, and earning a spot on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s second team.
 
 
Jeff Kyei
Position: Forward
Hometown: Tübingen, Germany
College: California University of Pennsylvania (California, Pennsylvania, NCAA Division II)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
With the Menace: For the Menace in 2012, played in 10 games and scored one goal.
In College: Scored seven goals, assisted five more and was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s first team.
 
 
Javi Lopez
Position: Defender
Hometown: Granada, Spain
College: Marshalltown Community College (Marshalltown, Iowa; NJCAA)
2012 College Class: Sophomore
 
With the Menace: Logged a team-high 1,335 minutes in 15 matches for the 2012 Menace. Lopez was the Man of the Match on June 9, when he headed in two second-half goals in a 2-1 win over Kansas City.
In College: In 2012 was named to the Junior College Division I All-American First Team and to the All-Central Region First Team. Scored seven goals and five assists, for a total of 19 points. Played in 14 matches in 2011, collecting three goals and four assists.
