The Menace has had plenty to celebrate, scoring 14 goals in three matches -- all wins.
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Friday, June 29, 2012 – They’ve played only one home match, and that was six weeks ago. The Des Moines Menace women are excited about the prospect of playing the next three Saturdays at Valley Stadium.
The inaugural Menace women host the Cincy Lady Saints tomorrow, for the first of three matches that close Des Moines’ home schedule. These matches begin at 4:30 p.m. and are followed by 7:30 nightcaps hosted by the Menace’s Premier Development League (men’s) team.
Head coach Kevin Schalk’s side has won all three of its Women’s League Soccer matches, including a 4-0 win over FC Indiana (South Bend) on May 19. Since opening the season at home, the Menace has won a pair of road matches, using a stoppage-time goal to win 2-1 at FC Indiana (South Bend) on June 2 and cruising to an 8-1 romp at FC Indiana (Lafayette) one week later.
The Menace and Saints (3-1-0) battle for sole possession of first place. Without a postseason, the WLS crowns its champion based on the standings after each team has played its eight-match schedule.
Eager to display his team for a home crowd for the first time in 42 days, Schalk is enthusiastic about the product his team is putting on the field.
“The reason why we formed this team was for local teams and players,” said Schalk. “The next three weeks will be really telling about how the community takes to the team.”
Outscoring opponents 14-2, the Menace has received goals from nine players.
“We spread the wealth,” said Schalk. “It’s anybody at any time. It’s about being unselfish and wanting it for the team rather than the individual glory.
“Our up-tempo style, we’re going to score goals,” Schalk continued. “We’re always looking to score, that’s our mentality.”
Iowa State’s Brittany Morgan leads the team with four goals; she also assisted a pair in the team’s last outing. Jill Schechinger (Upper Iowa) and Maggie Kukuk (Morningside College) have each scored twice.
