Menace interns Tyler Peeler and Jeremy Reinert will bring you a player spotlight each week during the 2012 season; this week features the first Menace goal scorer of the season, Maksym Kowal.
Only six minutes into his debut with the Menace, Maksym Kowal chipped Real Colorado Foxes goalkeeper Miguel Rosales, putting the Menace up 1-0.
Taking the field for the first time together, the 2012 Menace was still trying to find its rhythm. Not wasting any time, Kowal demonstrated that was all he needed to get acclimated to the Menace atmosphere in an eventual 1-1 draw.
“It felt great,” said Kowal. “A good way to join the Menace.”
Joining the Menace was something that Kowal knew would be a good fit. With aspirations of playing professionally, the environment of Des Moines is what attracted the native of Mississauga, Ontario, to the Menace.
“I heard it was a professional environment,” said Kowal. “I wanted to treat (the season) like it was professional.”
Playing professionally is a common goal among Premier Development League players and scoring and boosting his stats is one way to get there.
Though Kowal’s goal came early in the season, the Menace hasn’t been able to produce any more scores. The team doesn’t lack talent, but time to blend is just as important in the eyes of Kowal.
“Everybody on the team knows how to play soccer,” explained Kowal. “Nobody’s lacking speed or ability, it’s just the chemistry. Coming together and finding the flow of the game.”
Hoping to help the Menace find its groove this weekend, Kowal simply explains why Menace fans should be excited for the game.
“For Menace getting its first win.”
