WEST DES MOINES, IOWA – Tuesday, April 3, 2012 – The schedule is set for the Des Moines Menace’s inaugural Women’s League Soccer season.
The Menace women open at home on Saturday, May 19 against defending WLS champion FC Indiana. This is the first of four home matches for Des Moines’ WLS team – all starting at 4:30 p.m. at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines.
The Menace’s Premier Development League men’s team will play at 7:30 following each of the four women’s games, giving fans two games for the price of one.
Kevin Schalk, Youth Development Director for the Menace, is the head coach of the organization’s first-ever women’s team.
“I am looking forward to getting the team in and starting training,” said Schalk. “Opening up against FC Indiana will be a tough task but will give us a true sense of what to expect and what we will need to work on. With the WPS (Women’s Premier Soccer League, which folded during the offseason) not playing, a few of the teams we play will have some ex-pros.”
What can Menace fans expect from their new women’s team?
“We have a very technical and fast team coming in so we will play an attacking style to excite the fans with plenty of goals,” Schalk said. “We will do our best to get them ready for the men's side.”
After debuting last year, the WLS features five teams in its second season. Each team plays a home-and-home series with every other team in the league. The league champion is determined by regular-season record.
