WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 – Starting in 2012, the Des Moines Menace will field a Women’s League Soccer team.
The Menace becomes the sixth team in the Indianapolis-based league, joining the Chicago Breeze, the Cincinnati Lady Saints, FC Indiana, Ft. Wayne SC and the Indiana Invaders. The 10-match season begins in May and concludes in July.
Des Moines’ WLS expansion team will play home games at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines. The team will be part of one of the most successful amateur soccer organizations in North America. On the men’s side, the Menace enters its 19th season in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League – the continent’s highest level of amateur soccer.
“We look forward to joining the WLS,” said Menace general manager Todd Meiners. “We believe the training environment and the experience the players will gain over the summer will benefit them, as well as their college programs. Our WLS team will represent the highest level of women’s soccer in the state of Iowa, helping spread the excitement of the game.”
Kevin Schalk is the head coach of Des Moines’ WLS side. Schalk, the Menace’s Youth Development Director, has college coaching experience with the Wells College (N.Y.) men’s team and the Central College (Iowa) women’s team. He also enters his third season as a member of the PDL staff.
“I'm excited to have the opportunity to lead this team through its first season and to be able to work with the staff and players from our local schools,” Schalk said. “This is a big step for our entire organization and the community, as it allows all youth players to watch and associate with some of the best players at the college level. As a club we are working to provide the full soccer pyramid, which will allow our players a chance to compete at the highest levels in one structure.”
