John Sosa looks for a teammate in his four-assist performance on Saturday. The Menace rolled to a 5-2 home win over St. Louis.
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Friday, May 27, 2011 – Des Moines Menace midfielder John Sosa has earned a spot on the Premier Development League’s Team of the Week, announced yesterday by the United Soccer Leagues.
Sosa set up six goals in two wins last week. He collected a franchise-record four assists in Saturday’s 5-2 win over St. Louis, four days after notching two assists in his Menace debut – a 3-0 win at Springfield on May 17.
In just two appearances, the former UMKC standout doubled the Menace’s individual high from a year ago, when Clark Bradford, Stephen Okai and Sterling Copeland shared the team lead with three assists. In the last five seasons, Menace great Tomas Boltnar is the only other Des Moines player with more than five assists in a single season.
A native of Colombia who calls St. Cloud, Fla., his hometown, Sosa is this week’s featured player on MenaceSoccer.com. Each week, the team features a “Spotlight Player” with a video and story.
The current PDL Team of the Week includes Heartland Division foes Troy Green and Ricardo Yeverino of Kansas City and Real Colorado’s Julian Donaldson.
UP NEXT: Des Moines is idle over the Memorial Day Weekend. The Menace (3-1-0) and the Kansas City Brass (2-2-0) meet at Overland Park Soccer Complex next Wednesday (June 1), one week after the Brass rallied for a 2-1 win that kept the Menace from clinching the PDL Heartland Division’s spot in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Menace still has one team in the Open Cup, as the team’s entry in the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) qualified in April.
The Menace is back at Valley Stadium on Saturday, June 4, hosting Des Moines International on Youth Soccer Night, presented by Powerade and Vitamin Water. All youth-soccer players and coaches receive free admission when they wear their team jerseys or show their coaches’ passes.
