The Menace family mourns the untimely loss of Derek Cisneros.
A car accident on March 5 has tragically taken the life of Derek, who was a member of the Menace Academy’s 13U team.
Derek was a 12-year-old seventh-grader who lived in Marshalltown. He joined the Menace Academy last fall, and he made a positive, lasting impression. He is remembered for his fun, friendly personality and his love of the game.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Derek’s family and friends, and we invite you to support the Cisneros family in their time of need by visiting https://www.gofundme.com/cisneros-family.
Derek’s coaches and teammates have shared these memories.
Coach Muriz Hodzic:
“Derek was always smiling and happy. During practice, he liked to challenge me and show his soccer moves. I'll always remember him as full of life, fun to be around, and his great sense of style in haircuts!”
Coach JR Fernandes:
“Derek was a special kid. Last season when I first met the kids, Derek came to practices with a black gloves on his hands. At our first game, he went for a throw-in and made a mistake. Because he had gloves on, the ball slipped from his hand and was a turnover; So I said, ‘Derek, take the gloves off,’ and he did. He always had a smile on his face, played jokes all the time. Fun kid with a lot of talent. We will miss you Derek.”
“I will remember Derek for his sweet and smiling face, and his friendliness to everyone.”
“Derek and I had many good talks before practices. He was a great friend and teammate; I will miss him.”
“Derek was so much fun to have around; he had a great sense of humor and I really enjoyed playing with him.”
Kevin, Melissa, and Dylan O’Connor:
“Derek was always friendly, polite and had a great smile. He gave 100% on the soccer field and we will all miss him.”
"We will miss you Derek and will always have you in our hearts. It was an honor to practice with you. Our prayers to you and your family."

"I liked to play soccer with Derek and I will miss him. I will play as hard as I can every day in his memory."
The Menace Academy 13U boys will honor their teammate this spring by wearing patches with the No. 9 that Derek proudly wore for the Menace.
The organization will also have a moment of silence for Derek before the Premier Development League's first home game, which could come as early as May 10 or May 17, based on U.S. Soccer's schedule for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
