WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Saturday, June 18, 2016 – Southwestern Iowa was well-represented in the 2016 East-West All-Star Cup today at Valley Stadium.
Atlantic’s David Thomsen, Underwood’s Jake Dotterer and Harlan’s Ethan Knudson found the net in the West team’s 4-1 victory.
The Westsiders grabbed a three-goal lead before halftime, and Thomsen collected his second goal late in the match, after Hudson’s Braxton Rottinghaus gave the East its lone score in the 55th minute.
“Just a couple lucky bounces – just happened to come to me last,” Thomsen said after earning MVP honors. “The second one came on a great corner (from West Des Moines Valley’s Mark Broderick). I’d actually never scored on a header goal before, so that one’s pretty memorable.”
Less than six minutes into the match, Dotterer gave the West a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Thomsen scored in the 29th minute, when he chipped the ball over his defender and volleyed home a goal into the side netting.
Right before halftime, Knudson scored on another header for the West, rising above the crowd to connect with a long throw-in from Atlantic’s Ryan Hawkins.
“It was awesome to go out this way. To be here with one of my (high school) teammates made it especially nice,” said Thomsen, who will continue his education at the University of Northern Iowa. “It was an honor to be invited, and it was great playing with these guys.”
Bringing together the state’s top graduating seniors, the East-West All-Star Cup is hosted by the Des Moines Menace. The Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association organizes the cup for boys and girls games, which are presented by Soccer Master.
The girls all-stars take their turn next Saturday (June 25) at 2 p.m., back here at Valley Stadium.
